Microsoft and Google DeepMind agree on AI control — but not on who ho…

Over two days this month, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis published framework manifestos on X, with Nadella posting "The Reverse Information Paradox" on July 12 and Hassabis posting "A Framework for Frontier AI and the Dawning of a New Age" on July 14. Nadella's argument focuses on value capture, stating enterprises pay for AI twice—once in tokens and again in proprietary know-how leaked through prompts, corrections, and evals—and proposes owning the learning loop with a model-agnostic orchestration layer. Hassabis draws a different line concerning who governs risk, calling for a standards body modeled on FINRA that tests frontier models for cyber, bio, and deception before release, with labs submitting models up to 30 days before deployment. Both frameworks route through the author's own strength: Nadella's advice routes enterprises to Azure and Foundry, while Hassabis's gate emphasizes the importance of scale, as large incumbents can absorb testing costs and shape standards more easily than smaller challengers.
