Greenhouse CEO Daniel Chait says the job market is brutally competitive, with 2,539 applicants for every 10 open roles on his platform. His advice: stop applying to famous companies like OpenAI. “Don’t just apply to, you know, OpenAI, because they’re in the news every day,” Chait told Fortune. “Think of the job you want and apply to less-known companies who do that type of work—you’ll find a lot more success.” There are currently 175,000 live jobs on Greenhouse, with an average of around 254 applicants per job ad, pushing applications per recruiter up by 412%. Chait explains that high-profile brands receive tens of thousands of applications for a single role, while similar lesser-known companies get very few. “Go beyond the headlines,” he encourages. Other challenges include an “AI doom loop” where candidates spam AI-written résumés and recruiters impose hurdles like six-hour interviews and 90-minute assessments. About a fifth of Gen Zers worldwide are classified as “NEETs,” locked out of the job market.
