Designing responsible AI for learning

Google announced updates to its education products, including building Guided Learning capabilities into Google Search and Google Classroom and evolving its approach to school controls, according to a Nov 03, 2026 post by Chris Phillips, VP & General Manager, Education. Guided Learning, which in Gemini acts as an interactive study tool coaching students through problem solving via open-ended questions and step-by-step breakdowns, will be built into Search for student accounts so that when systems understand a student is looking for certain types of homework help, Search walks them through the topic or problem step by step rather than going directly to the answer; a pilot in select U.S. schools begins later this month to gather and incorporate educator feedback before expanding to other school districts in the coming months. Starting today, Guided Learning is globally available in Google Classroom, where a student starting a teacher-assigned Guided Learning activity gets a 1-1 study tool anchored in class material, and teachers get real-time insights to spot where the class might need extra support; Google says it worked closely with schools and educators to test the feature and integrate their feedback before launch. Google also said it believes schools should have control over AI in their classrooms and in providing administrators with control.
