Google has announced a leadership reshuffle at Google DeepMind, with CEO Sundar Pichai revealing that Demis Hassabis will step back from day-to-day operations to take on a new strategic role focused on the future of artificial general intelligence (AGI). Hassabis will become Chair of Google DeepMind and Chief Scientist of Alphabet, while continuing to lead Isomorphic Labs. Koray Kavukcuoglu, currently DeepMind's Chief Technology Officer and Google's Chief AI Architect, will be promoted to Senior Vice President of Google DeepMind, reporting directly to Pichai, and will take charge of Gemini model development, frontier AI research, and the Gemini app and developer teams. Pichai highlighted Kavukcuoglu's 13-year history at DeepMind, noting his role in building the company's early deep learning team and contributing to breakthroughs such as WaveNet and DQN. The announcement also confirmed the departure of Jeff Dean, who is leaving after 27 years at Google. Dean, alongside Google Senior Fellow Sanjay Ghemawat, is launching an independent public benefit corporation aimed at accelerating research in machine learning, science and engineering. Pichai said Google would continue working with the pair as a founding investor and cloud partner.
