Moonshot AI unveiled Kimi K3 on July 17 and stopped accepting new subscriptions just three days later, as demand overwhelmed the company’s available computing capacity in under 72 hours. Kimi K3 is the largest open-weight AI model released to date, with 2.8 trillion parameters and the ability to process 200k context windows. By late July, six of the top 10 most-used models on OpenRouter came from Chinese companies, with all of the top five being Chinese. Moonshot released Kimi K3 as an open-weight model, allowing developers to download, modify, and run it on their own servers for free. Moonshot planned to release K3’s full model weights by July 27 and made good on that timeline. On key benchmarks, Kimi K3 matches or outperforms Claude Opus and GPT-4 Turbo on many tasks. Cursor, the AI coding startup, announced that Moonshot’s Kimi provided the foundation for Composer 2, its coding model.
