Two nonprofit groups warning about artificial intelligence dangers, the Tarbell Center and Model Evaluation and Threat Research, are backed by allies of Anthropic and its regulatory agenda, according to a Washington Examiner review of public statements. The Tarbell Center, which promotes AI-skeptical journalism, has ties to Meta cofounder Dustin Moskovitz and Skype cofounder Jaan Tallinn, while METR is connected to Moskovitz, Tallinn, and AI researcher Paul Christiano. All three played roles in Anthropic’s rise. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei promoted METR in an essay this month, saying its team would act as “third-party evaluators” assessing Anthropic’s tools. The Tarbell Center runs a fellowship placing tech reporters at legacy news outlets; the Washington Examiner previously discussed placing a reporter with Tarbell, interviewing candidates, though nothing came to fruition. A Tarbell spokesperson said it “exists to strengthen independent, rigorous journalism about AI,” that editorial independence is central, and that funders have no editorial role. Moskovitz and Tallinn were early investors in Anthropic after its 2021 founding, and Christiano was an initial trustee for Anthropic’s Long-Term Benefit Trust in 2023 and founded Alignment Research Center, later stepping down to join the Anthropic-backed AI Safety Institute.
