OpenAI opened orders Wednesday for Codex Micro, a limited-edition desktop keypad that lets agentmaxxers monitor and control their AI minions. Codex Micro is a collaboration with Work Louder, a boutique hardware company known for customizable mechanical keyboards. The small, square macro pad features backlit keys, a rotary knob and a tiny joystick, and includes a push-to-talk option and a dial to adjust reasoning settings. It is a niche device for Codex power users, will only be available until it sells out, and is priced at $230. Last week OpenAI launched ChatGPT Work for people who use agents for things other than coding. This is not the consumer hardware device slated to come out this year; according to Bloomberg, that device will be a smart home speaker with ChatGPT built in, and Bloomberg's sources say OpenAI will unveil the speaker this year for availability in 2027. That timeline could hit roadblocks over Apple's recent lawsuit against OpenAI alleging stolen hardware secrets.
