Dutch Parliament calls for national AI strategy for higher education

Most MPs in the Dutch House of Representatives on Tuesday backed a motion tabled by D66 calling on the government to develop a national AI strategy for vocational education (MBO), higher professional education (HBO) and university education. The Association of Dutch Universities (UNL) supports the idea. RTL Nieuws recently revealed that more than 50 per cent of last year’s Master’s theses were written wholly or partly with the help of a chatbot, and Utrecht, Amsterdam and Tilburg have developed their own chatbots. D66 MP Ilana Rooderkerk called for a national approach, saying both students and lecturers need to learn how to use AI more effectively, with emphasis on “critical thinking, source research, recognising disinformation and misinformation, and understanding the limitations of artificial intelligence”. Almost all parties supported the proposal, from left to right; only the far-right parties Forum for Democracy (FvD) and the PVV did not. The proposal faces conundrums, as higher education institutions in the Netherlands are in principle free to decide what they teach, and views on AI in education differ. UNL spokesperson Ruben Puylaert says institutions are already doing a great deal in this area and draws a parallel with the national Talent Strategy.
