Klara and the Sun Trailer: Ishiguro's AI Fiction Is Now Engineering F…

Sony Pictures released the first trailer for *Klara and the Sun* on June 22, featuring Jenna Ortega as Klara, a solar-powered humanoid AI purchased to companion a chronically ill teenager. Nobel laureate Kazuo Ishiguro finished the novel before its technologies existed at scale, and Taika Waititi's adaptation arrives on October 23 into a world where they all do. Vision Transformers now process images in discrete rectangular boxes, CRISPR-Cas9 has produced live humans with germline edits, and companion AI platforms face wrongful-death suits in federal court. A humanoid robot performing sustained locomotion and conversation consumes roughly 200 to 1,000 watts continuously. The best commercially available perovskite-silicon tandem solar cells reach 30.1% efficiency, with laboratory records hitting 34.85% in April 2025. A human-scale robot body surface of approximately 1.7 square meters receiving peak direct sun at 1,000 W/m² could theoretically harvest up to about 592 watts at that efficiency, which is barely sufficient for continuous low-activity operation and drops to zero indoors, at night, or under cloud cover. Active research directions include ultra-thin organic photovoltaic films integrated into synthetic skin, triboelectric nanogenerators, and Maximum Power Point Tracking algorithms.
