Google DeepMind engineer Vidy Thatte built an experimental browser called Gem that generates websites from scratch using artificial intelligence instead of loading them directly. Thatte first demonstrated the project on X on July 22 before releasing a TestFlight version a few days later. Apple’s TestFlight listing describes Gem as a “generative browser.” Unlike Chrome or Safari, Gem treats the URL entered by the user as a prompt and sends it to Google’s Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite model, which generates a webpage in response. If users enter a real website address, Gem creates its own interpretation of that site rather than displaying the original page. Entering a nonexistent address causes the AI to create an entirely new website based on what it thinks should exist there. Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite is fast enough that there is almost no practical difference between loading a conventional webpage and generating a new one on demand. Gem is a side project and does not include Gemini API access itself; users must provide their own Gemini API key linked to their Google account. Each URL entered generates an API request, and users are responsible for the resulting usage. A free API key can be obtained through Google AI Studio, although XDA’s testing reportedly reached the free usage limits within two minutes, after which the author enabled billing and added $10.
