Facing lawsuits and protests, Elon Musk’s xAI, now called SpaceXAI, has agreed to gradually remove 69 gas turbines from its "Colossus" data center in Memphis, Tennessee. The company announced the plan on Thursday after being sued over noise and air pollution from the temporary gas turbines. SpaceXAI says it reached an agreement with the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality, “establishing a fixed removal timeline for all 69 of the temporary, mobile turbines that currently power our facility in Southaven, Mississippi." The process will begin "as early as August 2026," but could take until July 2027 to complete. The company is also building at a second and third site along the Mississippi-Tennessee border, leading to an increase in gas turbine use from over a dozen to 69. The Southern Environmental Law Center (SELC) disputes claims of rapid removal, noting the company added nine new polluting gas turbines in July, bringing the total to 69. Earthjustice enforcement director Laura Thoms argues xAI is operating one of the largest and most polluting power plants in the nation without required permits. SpaceXAI is preparing to replace the temporary turbines with 41 permanent turbines authorized under a Clean Air Act permit granted in March 2026, part of a 1.2 GW power plant. The permanent turbines will use “advanced emission control technologies” to convert emitted gases into nitrogen and water.
