Voice actress Megumi Ogata, known for playing Shinji in Evangelion, is asking the Japanese government to intervene over AI voice generators, calling it “heartbreaking.” Speaking to TBS News Dig after Japan’s Ministry of Justice released a first draft of rules protecting voices under publicity rights, Ogata said, “My voice is a part of my identity. I really don’t understand why somebody would want to make me say things that I don’t want to say as they please and then sell it as my own voice. It’s heartbreaking.” She added, “Why can’t Japan, which calls itself a content superpower, establish rules for content use or tell the world, ‘this is our policy,’ or ‘this is a problem for us?’” The article notes that voice actors and animators have railed against AI growth, with Tom Hanks saying Pixar will be able to make Toy Story after he’s dead because of AI. Kenjiro Tsuda, voice of Yu-Gi-Oh!’s Seto Kaiba and Jujutsu Kaisen’s Kento Nanami, has sued TikTok over AI replicating his voice in hundreds of videos. Additionally, one “mid-sized game company” is forcing applicants to draw in front of them during interviews to prove AI wasn’t used. The Japanese government is also looking to use AI to crack down on manga and anime piracy.
