At VB Transform 2026, Stanford University’s James Zou argued that the next frontier in AI is not a single, more capable agent but tens of thousands of collaborating agents. His team’s research provides a blueprint for connecting legacy databases to AI orchestration layers. The project began as a "Virtual Lab" of five to eight agents mirroring his physical Stanford lab, including an AI professor and AI students that attended an "agent school" for supervised fine-tuning. This virtual lab designed new nanobody proteins for recent COVID variants that "worked much better than the previous human-designed nanobodies" in wet-lab validation. The team then expanded to the Virtual Biotech, comprising tens of thousands of specialized AI agents overseen by a Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) agent, operating through divisions such as target discovery, molecule design, and clinical trials. Individual agents specialize further within divisions, such as one agent for genetics data and another for genomics and single-cell data. In a head-to-head comparison, the multi-agent team produced better solutions that were more resilient against compounding errors than a single agent tasked with the same scientific challenge.
