Meta ordered take down of AI-generated videos, tighten deepfake safeg…

Meta’s Oversight Board has ordered the company to remove two AI-generated videos from Facebook and called for stronger measures against deepfakes. One case involved a Scottish Labour councillor falsely portrayed as making inflammatory remarks about refugees; the board said the clip appeared AI-generated due to a lack of synchronisation between the audio and the councillor’s facial movements, that Meta had concluded it did not breach its content policies and did not require an AI label, and that it should have been removed under Meta’s hateful conduct rules and carried a “high risk AI” label. The other case involved an AI-generated video mocking a young Muslim woman in Europe involved in a campaign focused on menstrual health education and reducing stigma around health conditions affecting women and girls from ethnic minority communities; the board identified a video depicting her exercising in an absurd manner and eating junk food as a violation of Meta’s bullying and harassment policy. The board said Meta’s existing safeguards were inadequate, recommended nine policy changes, including demoting content carrying a “high risk AI” label and warning screens, and said AI-generated deepfakes are increasingly used to harass and silence women from public discourse, according to Pamela San Martin, co-chair of the Oversight Board.
