Google DeepMind, in collaboration with Google Research, has unveiled WeatherNext 2, a weather forecasting model that outperformed traditional physics-based methods during the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season. The model generates probabilistic ensemble forecasts up to 15 days ahead with temporal resolution down to one hour, running 8x faster than its predecessor models. The National Hurricane Center tested WeatherNext 2 during the 2025 season, where it surpassed conventional methods across several key performance metrics for cyclone forecasting. Researchers do not yet fully understand how it achieves this accuracy using lower-resolution weather data inputs. WeatherNext will be open-sourced, following earlier components like GraphCast and GenCast, with pretrained weights and lower-resolution data inputs publicly available. The crypto ecosystem, including prediction markets and parametric insurance protocols that trigger payouts when meteorological thresholds are crossed, could benefit from the model’s hourly resolution and 15-day forecast window. DeFi protocols can integrate the model’s outputs directly or build derivative products without enterprise licensing deals. The partnership with the NHC adds institutional credibility, signaling the technology has crossed from research curiosity to practical tool. However, better predictions do not automatically translate into better products, as the gap between a model’s output and smart contract execution still requires robust oracle infrastructure, proper risk modeling, and sufficient liquidity.
