Oracle AI Database 26ai introduces EBCDIC compatibility capabilities to address challenges in mainframe re-platforming, enabling organizations to migrate from IBM mainframe databases to Oracle AI Database on ASCII-based systems while preserving legacy EBCDIC applications. The capabilities focus on two fundamental challenges: accurate character encoding conversion and preservation of EBCDIC binary ordering. At the core is a family of IBM CDRA-compatible EBCDIC client character sets that implement IBM Character Data Representation Architecture code page definitions, providing source-to-target character mappings compatible with IBM’s published standards. This enables accurate character encoding conversion during data migration and subsequent database client/server communication. Additionally, Oracle AI Database now includes IBM CDRA-compatible EBCDIC client character sets with matching emulated EBCDIC binary collations, each generated specifically to preserve the EBCDIC binary ordering that legacy applications, such as those written in COBOL, implicitly rely on for SQL predicates, range searches, and sort results. These capabilities can help organizations re-platform IBM mainframe databases while preserving data integrity and application compatibility.
