India's national AI infrastructure has a new mission: building an evidence base for traditional medicine. On July 31, 2026, the IndiaAI Mission and the Ministry of AYUSH signed a Memorandum of Understanding in New Delhi, committing India's sovereign AI data platform and subsidized GPU infrastructure to the five disciplines of traditional medicine: Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homoeopathy. The agreement provides access to labeled training data and compute power. Ayurveda is approximately 3,000 to 5,000 years old, documented in Sanskrit texts like the Caraka Samhita and Susruta Samhita. Sanskrit is a low-resource language, and state-of-the-art transformer models trained on Sanskrit-Hindi medical translation achieve BLEU scores around 48%. Unani texts present a parallel challenge in Arabic and Persian. As of 2016, India's Clinical Trials Registry contained approximately 200 records of clinical trials on Ayurvedic treatments. Ayurveda serves an estimated 500 million people in India. The open question is whether these ingredients can solve the upstream problem of data standardization, which the next two years will answer.
