Apple and OpenAI are the Best of Frenemies

Apple filed a lawsuit against OpenAI earlier this month, alleging a coordinated scheme to steal Apple’s trade secrets, specifically that former Apple employees now working on OpenAI’s hardware ambitions took confidential information and documents about unreleased products. OpenAI disputes the claims, stating it “hasn’t seen any evidence” the allegations are true. The partnership, which began in 2024 when Apple built ChatGPT into its Siri revamp, has soured. OpenAI is now working on a device meant to replace the iPhone, led by the designer of many of Apple’s iconic products. OpenAI’s research reportedly showed most users skipped the ChatGPT integration and opened the iOS app instead, leading executives to believe Apple had not promoted it. This spring, OpenAI reportedly hired an outside law firm and was weighing a breach-of-contract lawsuit. Apple has since agreed to a $1 billion-a-year deal to use Google’s Gemini to improve Siri.
