Two Lithuanian hikers stranded on a mountain in Poland this month needed a helicopter rescue after following a shortcut recommended by ChatGPT. According to Cybernews, the hikers asked ChatGPT for a faster route to the Five Lakes Valley in the Tatra Mountains. The chatbot directed them toward Niebieska Turnia and onto the Świnicka Ławka traverse, a section requiring climbing experience neither had. Unable to proceed or retreat, they contacted Tatra Volunteer Search and Rescue (TOPR) on July 4, and TOPR confirmed they were rescued safely by helicopter. This incident follows a similar case last year in British Columbia, where an AI-planned route left a couple stranded on Unnecessary Mountain without proper gear or forecast awareness, requiring local rescue. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development’s AI incident tracker has also logged chatbots inventing nonexistent destinations, such as a “Sacred Canyon of Humantay” in Peru. Additionally, a report found TripAdvisor’s AI-written review summaries downplayed serious safety complaints at hotels, describing properties as spotless despite guest reports of hygiene failures and harassment.
