Westpac plugs five AWS AI agents into core lending processes

Westpac is using AI agents built on Amazon Bedrock AgentCore to process payslips from customers applying for home loans or credit cards. Chief data, digital and AI officer Andrew McMullan told the AWS Financial Services Symposium in Sydney that AI has become “a core part of how the organization delivers value to our customers.” He said the bank has “specialist agents working alongside our bankers” to remove complexity from lending processes. Every week, Westpac processes over 32,000 payslips and “more than 1.5 million transactions” as part of its analysis of income and spending habits. The agents classify, read, and extract data from payslips, run calculations, and verify against policy before giving the banker output to review. McMullan said this reduces time spent on documents and helps avoid delays, such as when customers upload the wrong or out-of-date payslip, by providing real-time feedback so customers can correct issues immediately. He confirmed the agents are “running in [Westpac’s] production systems, and are not merely prototypes,” with bankers maintaining oversight. The bank showed a slide with five agents running in its lending and credit application processes, including an “account scrutiny agent” used within mortgage applications.
