Hire More People, or Hand it to AI?

According to Sander Mangel, founder and senior solutions architect for Open Commerce and VP of technical solutions for AEM member company Above the Fray, anecdotes about artificial intelligence (AI) replacing entire departments are "not the norm," and we are still a long way from widescale department replacement. Mangel suggests managers addressing personnel bottlenecks consider three options. First, enable existing employees by giving them AI tools, such as a license for Claude or Perplexity, to handle tedious tasks like creating daily reports that cross-reference several documents, with proper training provided. Second, build an AI tool to automate targeted functions, noting that AI agents can handle the 80% of cases that aren't outside the norm, while the 20% of edge cases cause ideas of full department replacement to break down. People with 20 or 30 years of experience are pouring that experience into building AI agents, and managers should consider if an agent can abstract away complexity, scale across colleagues and departments, and whether a task is worth automating, as a task performed once a year is probably not worth it. Third, hire additional people.
