Meta has begun construction on its first Canadian data centre, a C$13bn (US$9.1bn), 1GW AI campus in Sturgeon County, Alberta, which expands the company's global infrastructure to 33 sites. The hyperscale facility will process AI workloads and support core products, with the development employing 3,000 construction workers at peak activity and creating more than 300 permanent operational positions once complete. Rachel Peterson, VP of Data Centers at Meta, said the site was selected for its access to energy and infrastructure, strong talent base, and community partners. The project represents more than C$13bn (US$9.1bn) investment, according to her LinkedIn post. Meta worked with Greenlight Limited Partnership, AltaLink, Capital Power and the Alberta Electric System Operator to forecast energy requirements years before operations begin. The company will fund all energy costs associated with its data centre operations and is financing new power generation capacity and grid infrastructure improvements to prevent negative impacts on local consumers. The facility will match 100% of its electricity consumption with clean and renewable energy sources. Peterson said the company is "fully funding new generation and grid infrastructure in Alberta which improves the reliability for all consumers."
