Investor Ross Gerber of Gerber Kawasaki has hailed Alphabet Inc.-backed Robotaxi service Waymo ahead of Elon Musk-led Tesla Inc., stating on X on Sunday that Waymo is "way safer and better" than Tesla's vision-based Full Self-Driving (FSD). Gerber shared that he had been using Waymo recently to commute in Los Angeles, noting the Robotaxis drove better than human drivers and that Waymo avoids difficult areas and turns where "tesla tries and fails often," resulting in longer routes. He questioned whether Tesla could "catch up" to Waymo. Tesla's Robotaxi service operates in three Texas cities—Houston, Austin and Dallas—with close to 69 vehicles in its fleet, offering cheaper rides than Waymo, Uber Technologies Inc., and Lyft Inc. The Texas Department of Transportation's Executive Director Marc Williams backed Tesla's Cybercab, calling it a "significant shift" in mobility. However, Tesla faces challenges as its self-driving tech and safety have been questioned by former data labelers and engineers who do not trust the FSD system and its safety data. Meanwhile, Waymo recently introduced a premium subscription tier for frequent users, touting quicker pickup times and early access to service rollouts in new areas.
