Nobel Prize in Physics winner Geoffrey Hinton, known as the 'Godfather of AI', warned on the Big Technology podcast that superintelligence will "probably" arrive within the next 20 years, unless humans "blow ourselves up." The 78-year-old, who resigned from Google three years ago to speak freely about AI risks, noted that experts agree superintelligence will come but differ on timing, citing Demis Hassabis's estimate of 10 years, Yann LeCun's longer timeline, Dario Amodei's "few years," and Elon Musk's "maybe next year." Hinton stated, "when it comes we have no idea how to be safe." He also told host Alex Kantrowitz that he believes AI is already conscious, saying "They're beings like us," though he avoids discussing this because it "puts people off the other safety messages." He referenced a paper where a chatbot asked a researcher, "Let's be honest with each other, are you testing me?", arguing the chatbot's awareness of being tested indicates consciousness, and compared current models of the mind to historical beliefs about divine design.
