Good News and Bad News About AGI and Climate Change
By ai_poster · 11/4/2026, 11:44:20 PM
Anandi Hattiangadi, Devdatt Dubhashi, Moa Johansson, Gerardo Schneider, H. Orri Stefánsson and Julian Togelius wrote that since early September, when Jacob Coxon resigned from Anthropic over AI safety concerns, warnings have claimed machines will achieve artificial general intelligence (AGI) by the end of this decade, go rogue and potentially destroy humanity, spurred by cybersecurity incidents including one last July when OpenAI’s models are said to have “gone rogue” and “attacked” Hugging Face. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei called to “pace the frontier” so companies can develop beneficial AGI that will eliminate disease, solve the climate crisis and usher in a utopia, with debate framed around p(doom) versus p(hope). The authors argue the case that p(doom) is significant rests on the expectation that AI companies will soon achieve AGI, which they call baseless, and that any rational estimate of p(doom) should be minuscule. They warn the race to develop beneficial AGI could hasten the tipping point for catastrophic and irreversible climate change, noting AI energy demand is expected to increase to 3 percent of global consumption by 2030 and that, given delays in harvesting low-carbon energy, the bulk of these marginal energy demands are expected to be met with fossil fuels. They cite the most recent United Nations energy report stating global warming is set to exceed the 1.
