Mark Zuckerberg tells investors why Meta is selling compute and still…

Meta is pursuing a dual strategy with its computing resources, holding talks with AI rival Anthropic about leasing internal computing power and developing plans for a cloud infrastructure business to compete with Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud, while also purchasing computing capacity from companies like AMD and Crusoe. On the company's most recent quarterly earnings call, CEO Mark Zuckerberg explained that "there's just nowhere near enough compute for all the demand," and that Meta receives many offers for its compute but also has valuable internal uses. He stated it "would be foolish to basically just sell all of the compute and take a short-term profit," so Meta plans to monetize current compute in the short term while investing in the future. Zuckerberg does not expect demand to slow, and Meta is building 27 data centers across the U.S., which has caused a shortage of qualified construction workers. To address this, Meta unveiled the LevelUp program a little over three months ago, a multi-year partnership with real estate and infrastructure services firm CBRE that "provides free, rapid training to turn thousands of Americans with no prior experience." Zuckerberg told investors, "We basically see a very large demand for all of this, and want to go maximize the opportunity to build out all of these different businesses."
