OpenAI’s upcoming device, slated for release in 2027, will be shaped like a doughnut roughly the size of a hockey puck and likely cost more than $300, according to people familiar with the matter. The product, essentially a smart speaker without a display, is designed to be easy to carry around the home with one hand. OpenAI is positioning it as an AI-first computer that can help users get things done, with a design intended to stand out from current smart speakers dominated by Amazon.com Inc. and Alphabet Inc.’s Google. The new hardware also gives OpenAI a chance to show it’s not copying Apple Inc.’s designs, amid a legal battle over alleged intellectual property theft, which OpenAI denies. A representative for San Francisco-based OpenAI declined to comment on product plans. The device will work similarly to ChatGPT voice mode but with more advanced models for humanlike interactivity, learning about users over time. It will include moving parts, speaker grills, microphones, lights, a camera system, and other sensors to perceive the environment. The battery-powered item will work in different positions, such as in hand or on a nightstand. OpenAI eventually plans a family of devices, with the smart speaker easing into the market. The speaker was designed in collaboration with Jony Ive’s LoveFrom studio.
