Amazon blocked Meta's Muse AI assistant from shopping its store on a user's behalf, notifying customers on Sept. 20 that Muse had stopped working when browsing Amazon.com. Amazon sent a pop-up notification stating that "Continued access by an unauthorized AI agent violates Amazon's Conditions of Use, to which our customers have agreed." Amazon told GeekWire that Meta didn't inform the retailer of its plans for Muse to access its site and that the AI doesn't identify as an agentic tool, adding that third-party applications offering to make purchases on behalf of customers from other businesses should operate openly and respect service provider decisions about participation. Meta did not immediately respond to PCMag's request for comment. Amazon also said Muse can capture and store customer credentials, which may pose a security risk; Meta said at launch that Muse has "no visibility into people's passwords or payment methods." Meta and Amazon have partnerships allowing purchases through Facebook and Instagram. Amazon has its own agentic AI option, Buy for Me. Last year, Amazon sued Perplexity over similar tools; an appeals court overturned the initial ruling in August, per Reuters. Amazon implemented similar blocks for agentic shopping tools launched in ChatGPT and Google Gemini.
