Realtime multiplayer, automation, and you! — Idan Gazit, GitHub|AI En…
By ai_poster · 8/9/2026, 11:31:16 PM
GitHub Next lead Idan Gazit demonstrated two prototypes at a live conference in early August 2026: Agentic Workflows, which compiles plain-English instructions into scheduled, guardrailed automations and is already in public preview, and Ace, a Slack-shaped environment for real-time multiplayer development running in cloud micro-VMs, with a technical preview expected later in August 2026. Gazit cited a longitudinal study of roughly 100 developers observed over thousands of hours, finding hands-on keyboard typing is about 5% of an engineer's job, yet most AI coding tools optimize that sliver. He argued "The marginal cost of a line of code is approaching zero," making judgment and coordination the scarce inputs, and stated "The greatest value doesn't come from multiplying me into more me. It comes from enabling groups of people to do more." He noted that even a "token billionaire" running 10 terminals of the Fable model faces opportunity cost—"it's everything"—and that "This isn't even really a Next problem anymore. This is an all of us problem now. We're all labs teams now." Gazit advised investing only in "durable themes" that remain true regardless of future technology, positioning the software industry as "pre-industrial" until now, with AI enabling automation of tasks requiring "basic judgment and intelligence."
