LG Uplus has verified an intelligent home network technology in which AI autonomously analyzes and manages internet quality in home routers. On August 9, LG Uplus stated that, in collaboration with global semiconductor company Broadcom, it implemented a home network environment based on ‘edge AI’ that directly drives AI in routers, and verified technology allowing AI to analyze and optimize network status in home routers, not cloud servers. This confirms the feasibility of an intelligent home network that detects anomalies in advance and self-repairs before customers perceive a degradation in internet quality. Broadcom provided a Wi-Fi 8 platform equipped with a neural processing unit (NPU) that supports AI computations, while LG Uplus lightweighted the network quality prediction AI model, previously operated in the cloud, to enable operation in routers. Once commercialized, this technology could transform routers into core equipment that autonomously analyzes and manages network status. Lee Jin-hyeok, an executive at LG Uplus’s Consumer Service Development Lab, stated that as services requiring fast and stable networks, such as generative AI, extended reality (XR), cloud gaming, and ultra-high-definition IP, Internet, TV, continue to grow, the importance of AI-based intelligent home network technology is also increasing, and added that LG Uplus will expand collaboration with global technology partners to continuously advance related technologies.
