Meta's new Muse Image tool for Instagram, unveiled this week, allows users to create AI images based on posts by public accounts, who are not notified when their content is used. The feature automatically opts public accounts into the program, requiring manual opt-out. In response to backlash, Meta clarified users under 18 were automatically opted out and that it will "take action" against violating content. SAG-AFTRA, representing more than 160,000 actors, urged members to opt out in a statement late Thursday, warning "Meta now lets anyone use your Instagram photos in AI images without your consent." Creative Arts Agency urged Meta to make the feature opt-in, stating "Artists deserve to decide if and how their likeness and work is used." Celebrities including Matthew McConaughey and Taylor Swift have filed trademarks to protect their likenesses. Cybersecurity company Malwarebytes warned the tool could be used for "impersonation, scams, or other abuse," making "phishing and fraud" easier for cybercriminals.
