San Francisco Protesters Demand Halt to AI Race | ForkLog
By ai_poster · 7/14/2026, 10:05:19 PM
On July 11, around 200 people marched between the offices of OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google DeepMind in San Francisco, demanding a halt to the training of more powerful AI models, according to Decrypt. The march was organized by the movement Stop the AI Race. Activists did not call for shutting down existing services but suggested maintaining current models and temporarily redirecting development teams to applied systems, safety, and AI behavior alignment. Participants raised concerns about job reductions, the environmental impact of data centers, energy system strain, housing costs in San Francisco, and the influence of tech corporations. Some demonstrators urged state and local lawmakers to increase oversight of advanced AI systems. Mikael Trauzzi, a former AI researcher and the march organizer, noted a change in the movement’s strategy, aiming to bring the issue into the political agenda. According to him, the National Union of Healthcare Workers supported the event, and the march was also organized with the help of groups AI Action and QuitGPT. This was the second major march by Stop the AI Race; in March, around 200 people marched between the offices of Anthropic, OpenAI, and xAI, calling for a coordinated pause in advanced AI development.
