A coalition of scientists has urged US regulators to examine the potential consequences of placing data centres in orbit, a concept being explored by SpaceX, Blue Origin, and Google. Supporters argue space offers virtually unlimited solar energy and could reduce the environmental footprint of massive computing facilities on Earth. Google has described the concept as a long-term research effort and is reportedly in discussions with SpaceX to launch computing hardware into orbit. Jeff Bezos has predicted space-based data centres could become a reality within the next 10 to 20 years, while Elon Musk has confirmed, "SpaceX will be doing this." However, a coalition represented by Earthjustice has petitioned the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to conduct a comprehensive environmental review before approving projects involving millions of satellites. "Allowing a million orbiting data centres with no environmental review isn't just irresponsible — it's reckless," warned Tim Whitehouse. Scientists fear a dramatic increase in satellites could contribute to atmospheric pollution, damage the ozone layer, generate more space debris, and permanently change the appearance of the night sky. Experts also warn that increased light pollution could affect wildlife, astronomical research, and human health.
