The use of artificial intelligence in Latvian schools is becoming common, with teachers preparing lesson materials and students searching for information, generating ideas, and learning. This year, recommendations for AI use in education were prepared in Latvia; they do not prohibit AI but delineate permissible situations. AI can be used for lesson preparation, idea generation, and completing individual educational tasks, while during tests, exams, and assessments its use is prohibited unless explicitly allowed by the teacher. State methodologist Anna Beate Bumane says students' age matters: for grades 1 to 6, interaction with such tools should occur through the teacher, and independent use is recommended from around the age of 13, from grade 7, only under an educator's supervision. Experts acknowledge there is currently no nationwide approach; alongside recommendations, the European Union's Artificial Intelligence Act, personal data protection regulations, and internal rules of educational institutions apply. University of Stradins lecturer Arthur Kurbatov says responsibility lies with the teacher and that services determining whether a text was written using AI cannot be considered reliable evidence, serving only as a guideline. Experts warn about confidentiality, especially personal information about children. Researcher Kristaps Cīrulis believes European regulation is not keeping pace with technology.
