Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg ordered the development of a predictive market app named "Arena," according to a New York Times report on the 23rd (local time). The app is being developed as an independent service separate from Facebook and Instagram. Meta is considering using points like games instead of actual cash first but did not rule out introducing a function for real money in the future. This move follows the recent explosive growth of forecasting market platforms Polymarket and Calci, which recorded a total of $50 billion worth of transactions last year, with cumulative transaction volume exceeding $130 billion this year. Meta’s daily users reach 3.56 billion. An in-house meeting in April discussed releasing up to 50 new apps. Last month, Meta introduced a one-time photo-sharing app called "Instants" and a community app called "Forum." Meta previously released a prediction app called "FoCast" in 2020, which ended service in 2022. Regulatory risk is a variable, as a U.S. special forces soldier was indicted this year for betting on Venezuela-related confidential information. On the same day, Meta unveiled its own brand of smart glasses, "Meta Glass," with a starting price of $299, manufactured in collaboration with Rayvan parent company Essi.
