Demis Hassabis, Google DeepMind CEO and Nobel chemistry laureate, said on July 14 (local time) on X that "there are only a few years left until AGI arrives," warning that its impact will "unfold at a speed 10 times greater than the Industrial Revolution" and is "closer to the discovery of electricity or fire than to the internet or mobile." Arguing for a new regulator led by the United States, Hassabis pointed to the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) as a model, proposing that cutting-edge AI labs first voluntarily submit their models to a standard body 30 days before release for review, with submission becoming mandatory if evaluation proves effective. He stressed that a U.S.-led body would set international standards for AI. Hassabis held prior discussions for months with the Donald Trump administration, European officials, and peers before unveiling this proposal.
