OpenAI co-founder and CEO Sam Altman stated in a recent series of interviews that artificial general intelligence (AGI) is "very close" and predicted that robotics will have a "mind-blowing moment" similar to ChatGPT's launch within two to three years. However, he cautioned against expectations of a four-hour workweek, saying, "In a world with superintelligence, we're all going to be a lot busier than we expect." Altman conducted a systematic review of OpenAI's strategic missteps, revealing that to concentrate resources on key bets like coding agents, the company abandoned previously high-profile projects such as the video generation model Sora, because "it was more important to put compute and energy into coding agents." He admitted that "the last year has been pretty tough, and part of that is my fault," tracing the root problem to distraction. After investing heavily in computing power in early 2025, OpenAI faced anxiety over revenue growth and began laying out multiple business lines, but later made "hard decisions" to return to its core mission of providing the highest quality, most abundant, and lowest cost AI intelligence. Regarding "model distillation," Altman said, "I haven't thought deeply about distillation... it's not in my top ten worries."
