In a recent podcast, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei addressed a viral moment from the India AI Summit held in February 2026 in New Delhi, where he refused to hold the hand of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. During an interview with The Circuit, Amodei admitted the event was "extremely disorganised," stating that participants "came up at the last minute" and the order of standing was changed before they were ordered to hold hands. He explained that Prime Minister Narendra Modi told dignitaries to "suddenly hold hands." Altman later said he "was sort of confused." When asked about trust between leaders on existential risk, Amodei said "trustworthy actors need to get together and put the untrustworthy actors in a position where they kind of have to adopt the same standards." He noted he does not share the same vision as Altman, questioning, "why argue with someone when you don't have the same vision and you don't trust them?" Amodei added, "I am completely at peace with the idea that we're doing things our way and they're doing things their way," concluding, "We'll see who wins in the market and we'll see who wins in the court of public opinion."
