Sergey Brin, a co-founder of Google, is returning to front-line management to oversee the development of Google’s artificial intelligence, with a core mission to enhance the competitiveness of Gemini and drive its commercialization. On August 7 (local time), the Financial Times reported, citing internal sources, that Google has undertaken a fundamental restructuring of its AI leadership to accelerate Gemini’s monetization and narrow the gap with competitors. Leadership of Google’s AI business is shifting from Demis Hassabis, who prioritized research, to Brin, who emphasizes productization. Hassabis recently handed over actual management of DeepMind to Koray Kavukcuoglu, Senior Vice President, assumed the role of DeepMind chairman, and was appointed Chief Scientist of Alphabet to lead long-term AI research strategies. Brin will directly oversee Gemini’s development. He co-founded Google with Larry Page in 1998 while pursuing a doctoral degree at Stanford University, supported the launch of Google Brain in 2011, and facilitated the acquisition of DeepMind in 2014. Brin distanced himself from daily operations in 2023 when Hassabis became CEO of DeepMind. As concerns grew over Google falling behind competitors like OpenAI and Anthropic, Brin emerged as a leading candidate for the next AI leadership role. The restructuring began with the departure of Jeff Dean, a legendary researcher who served as Chief Scientist.
