At the recent WWDC developer conference, Apple launched a standalone app for its smart assistant, Siri, in iOS 27, reversing its previous stance that dismissed standalone chat bots as “marginal add-on tools.” Craig Federighi, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Software Engineering, explained the decision during a media discussion at the “Apple Park” headquarters. He stated that the change was driven by an urgent practical need from users: the desire to return to previous conversations, follow up on them, or refer back to them. Apple found that the most natural way for users to access and manage these conversations is through a dedicated app on the home screen. Federighi insists that Apple’s vision has not fundamentally changed, viewing the new app not as a separate chat platform but as a comprehensive conversational tool deeply integrated into the operating system. Siri remains distinguished by its ability to understand what is on the iPhone screen and interact with documents. The developer beta version of iOS 27 is available.
