Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference in the United Arab Emirates, OpenAI Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman said advanced artificial intelligence models now demonstrate greater intelligence than the world’s most intelligent scientists and can perform most office-based tasks, whereas at the beginning of this year AI was not equal to the world’s most intelligent scientists and was unable to perform many office-based tasks. Despite AI’s profound impact on the global economy and employment, he said human decision-making, creativity and accountability must remain central to the use of technology, and he warned that control over decisions about the future should not be entrusted to AI, nor should it gradually be allowed to decide what is best for humans. According to Altman, AI should be developed as a tool to assist and serve humans rather than humans becoming subordinate to the technology. Speaking about the growing electricity needs of facilities that operate AI systems, he said energy supply was the biggest obstacle to the sector’s development, adding that electricity generation and the physical resources required for it would remain major challenges in terms of cost and availability.
