Meta faces lawsuit claiming AI systems unfairly fired employees on pr…

A lawsuit filed this past Monday by 26 former and current Meta employees alleges the company used internal AI systems to choose people who got laid off, disproportionately affecting those on protected medical, pregnancy, family, or disability leave. The lawsuit claims Meta used systems including "Metamate," keystroke- and activity-monitoring data, and algorithmically assisted performance ranking to score and rank employees, using metrics such as productivity, code commits, and AI-tool usage that leave-takers could not accumulate. One scientist on approved pre-birth pregnancy leave was fired two days before she gave birth, and a manager linked his low rating to "broken time" from an injury. Meta told Courthouse News Service the claims lack merit, stating firing decisions "were and are made by people, not AI." The lawsuit also notes over 1,000 employees signed a petition demanding Meta stop harvesting employee data to train its AI, and quotes CTO Andrew Bosworth acknowledging "a tremendous number of employees [were] feeling anxieties about their futures." Meta laid off 8,000 workers (10% of staff) after reporting record revenue and doubling AI spending to $145 billion.
