Rules are not clear, ByteDance and Alibaba close AI companion feature

ByteDance and Alibaba will shut down their user-generated AI companion features on their apps starting July 15, following China's new rules that came into effect but lack published detailed standards. ByteDance's Doubao and Alibaba's Qwen will remove the feature of anthropomorphic AI agents, which are AI characters users create for interaction. The notification of service adjustment was released on June 3, coinciding with the start of the Temporary Measures for the Management of Interactive AI Anthropomorphic Services on July 15. The rule requires supervision based on risk level, but the lack of detailed standards has caused developer uncertainty. The decision sparked user disappointment, with some suggesting authentication or paid services instead of removal. ByteDance and Alibaba asked users to save important data before discontinuation, stating data will be deleted after a certain period, though the duration was not explained. ByteDance users can switch to Maoxiang, another interactive AI app. Analysts view the removal as an adjustment to new rules, not a reduction in AI business, and expect other companies to separate high-risk AI features into separate apps.
