Amazon and water technology provider Aganova have launched an AI-powered water loss reduction project in Bergamo, Italy, using acoustic leak detection technology built on AWS cloud services to identify and repair leaks in major water pipelines managed by Uniacque. Over the next 10 years, the project is expected to save 200 million litres of water annually, with savings verified through the Volumetric Water Benefit Accounting methodology. Official data indicate that Italy loses over 40% of the water introduced into its public supply networks through leaks, a level among the highest in Europe. The AI-powered system continuously monitors water flow and analyses data in real-time using machine learning algorithms to identify anomalies and provide precise geolocation data for rapid repairs. Uniacque CEO Pierangelo Bertocchi stated the collaboration helps prevent drinking water loss by monitoring big water intakes, while Aganova CEO Marcos Barrera noted the project builds on progress from a water replenishment project in São Paulo. Sergio Gianotti, head of AWS Public Sector in Italy, said the technology helps water utilities address leaks more efficiently.
