Apple's Safari browser in macOS Golden Gate includes a "Describe an Extension" tool that lets Apple Intelligence build custom browser add-ons from text prompts, offering a more private alternative to third-party extensions. The feature is part of Safari 27 in macOS 27 Golden Gate and requires installing the public beta of macOS Golden Gate, which users can access by enrolling their Apple account in Apple’s Beta Software program and activating beta updates from the Software Update pane in System Settings. The tool appears under the menu button on the left side of Safari's address bar, displaying suggested prompts like highlighting a word on all web pages, closing duplicate tabs, turning a page grayscale, or showing a firework on click. It also searches for similar extensions on the App Store before generating new ones. The "Describe Something Else" box accepts custom descriptions, but simpler extensions are more feasible; requests for ad blockers, password managers, or VPN extensions are unsupported due to their complexity. Created extensions automatically sync across Apple devices, including the iPhone, via the Share Across Devices option, which is active by default. Users cannot officially share generated extensions with others, but can send the prompt used. These AI-generated extensions contain no tracking scripts and never receive risky updates, unlike traditional extensions that may include tracking code or malicious updates.
