Industry analysts say the milestone is less about a single breakthrough model and more about China's strategy of building an AI ecosystem designed to attract developers and fast-track innovation. For much of the past two years Llama was the default foundation model for startups, researchers, and enterprises experimenting with generative AI, but that leadership is now gone. Alongside Qwen, companies including Moonshot AI (Kimi), MiniMax, Zhipu AI (GLM), and many more have rapidly released capable open-weight models, creating an ecosystem that prioritizes developer adoption over immediate monetization.
