Democrats’ calls to curb AI data-center expansion rattled markets on Friday, November 6, with Taiwan’s benchmark index tumbling more than 3,700 points intraday as investors weighed possible delays to U.S. AI infrastructure projects. Several Democratic governors and congressional candidates have proposed pausing approvals for new data centers or restricting AI development, raising concerns that the party’s midterm victories could slow construction, including in Texas, a major hub for Taiwanese server and power-equipment suppliers. Analyst Tsai Ming-han said Democrats’ congressional majorities fall short of the two-thirds threshold needed to override a presidential veto, so bipartisan negotiation will be essential and existing incentives remain protected. He said Democrats will not “hit the brakes or reverse course,” and that subsidies TSMC receives for building plants in the United States cannot be blocked because they cannot legislate to repeal the original laws, so the original framework still exists. Tsai said the selloff reflected political fear rather than deteriorating fundamentals, noting that third-quarter earnings at U.S. and Taiwanese companies remain strong, and advised against reducing holdings for now.
