Hong Kong's Correctional Services Department withdrew an AI-generated K-pop-style anti-drug video titled 'Obsession: The Sugar-Coated Trap' after backlash for appearing to glamorise substance use. Released on June 26 on the department's social media platforms, the video featured four AI-created girl group "idols" named Weedy, Coke, Icy and Little E—representing cannabis, cocaine, crystal meth and etomidate—with catchy taglines promoting their effects, such as "With a romantic puff of smoke, one stick is all it takes to forget your worries." The upbeat tone confused viewers, who said it resembled a promotional piece, prompting accusations that it undermined its anti-drug message. The department removed the original clip and uploaded a revised version showing the idols turning into elderly men before ending up in prison with the message: "Drugs are extremely harmful and can ruin a life." That version also failed to resonate and was quickly taken down, while the original concept sparked online humour, memes, recreated taglines and fan-made merchandise. The department apologised, stating it would "review our entire social media production process to ensure our crime prevention and educational messages are clear and accurate," adding that drugs are "poison wrapped in a sugar-coated package."
