Demonstrators opposed to artificial intelligence breached a Microsoft data center construction site on the edge of Amsterdam on Friday, scaling fencing and occupying the grounds. Social media footage showed activists inside the perimeter, with some climbing a construction crane to unfurl a banner and setting off flares. A Dutch campaign group, Geef Tegengas, said it organized the action and that hundreds of backers were blocking work at the site. Reuters reported that roughly 100 people entered the grounds, where banners including "Microsoft powers genocide" and "fuck AI" were displayed and chants of "Microsoft has got to go" rang out. Group spokesperson Roos Molenaar said, "We won't accept Amsterdam being used for the creation of AI slop and the facilitation of genocide," adding, "This data center is gulping up our drinking water to make the rich even richer." Microsoft did not immediately respond to a request for comment. A Dutch journalist reported that police were concerned about possible damage to the site from chemicals and that no evacuation was under way at the time. The project calls for three data center towers about 85 meters tall, built by British developer Pure Data Centres, with Microsoft as the sole tenant. The plan traces back to 2016, before Amsterdam moved to restrict new data centers, and the developer has navigated exemptions that allowed construction to proceed despite the city's moratorium on new facilities through 2030. The same group occupied the construction area in June, temporarily halting work
