A leaked video from 2024, shared on a private BetaWiki forum and later posted by Microsoft watcher Gareth, shows Microsoft’s canceled “Project Aion,” a Copilot-focused operating system that is nothing like Windows 11. The OS, described internally as an “agentic” operating system, drops the traditional Start menu in favor of a Copilot launcher. When booted, there are no desktop icons. The taskbar features a Copilot button instead of a Start menu or Task View button, greeting the user with “Good afternoon, Nathan,” and displaying a dashboard with three dynamic widgets: “Stay on Top” (my M365 feed), “Create something new,” and “News of the day.” A “My Stuff” section resembles the Start menu’s Recommended feed but contains standard web apps like Microsoft Edge, Teams, Word, Excel, and Microsoft To Do. Below these icons are chips for contextual tasks, such as “Understanding RAG” and “Design a Pirate Themed Birthday Cake.” Users can type into an “Ask me anything” text box to launch agentic tasks or browse the web via Microsoft Edge. Apps like Microsoft To Do run as web apps via Edge’s picture-in-picture mode, appearing as dedicated icons on the taskbar. Microsoft had plans to enable Win32 app support via the cloud.
